As summer gets fully underway, the influx of toxic jellyfish in Jeju waters is increasing, prompting calls for caution.
According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, a jellyfish watch is currently in effect for waters off Jeju and Seogwipo. A survey of seven sample sites last month found an average of 75 Nomura's(노무라) jellyfish per hectare.
In particular, more than 100 jellyfish per hectare have been detected along the coasts of Jeju and Seogwipo City, exceeding the threshold for an official jellyfish watch.
The National Institute of Fisheries Science says toxic Nomura's jellyfish are highly likely to be carried into Jeju's coastal waters by ocean currents. The institute will continue monitoring the situation through July 10.
