As more people come to regard their pets as family members, pet funeral services are becoming increasingly common.
Until now, however, Jeju had no dedicated pet cremation or memorial facility, forcing many owners to travel to the mainland or forgo proper funeral services altogether.
Now, Jeju's first public pet memorial facility has officially opened.

As of last year, approximately 70,000 companion animals were registered in Jeju.
With pets increasingly regarded as family members, demand for dignified funeral services has continued to grow.
[Slug] No pet funeral facility in Jeju
However, Jeju had not a single pet funeral facility, leaving many owners with no choice but to travel to the mainland or dispose of their pets in standard waste disposal bags.
[Slug] Public pet memorial facility opens
To fill this gap, Jeju has opened its first public pet memorial facility, Eoreumbi (어름비) Byeolhaneul(별하늘) Shelter, in Eoeum-ri (어음리), Aewol-eup.
[Slug] KRW 3.4 billion invested
Built with an investment of 3.4 billion won, the 500-square-meter facility includes a crematory, memorial room, columbarium with 350 niches, and a natural burial area.
[Slug] Complete funeral services available
By making a reservation, pet owners can receive the full range of funeral services, including consultation, memorial ceremony, cremation, and ash interment.
The facility will be operated by the Eoeum-ri(어음리) Village Association under a private management contract.
[Slug] Lower fees than private facilities
The province says service fees have been set lower than those charged by private pet funeral facilities to reduce the financial burden on pet owners.
