List of special pardons will soon be released
Nearly 2m people will be pardoned in honor of Liberation Day

The Ministry of Justice recently finished examining the list of people who will be specially pardoned in honor of Liberation Day on August 15th, and Jeju Islanders’ names may be on the list.

The ministry’s amnesty screening committee reviewed the list Monday. Each of the people on it will receive special amnesty and have their sentences reduced on the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan.

Nearly two million people are expected to receive pardons across the nation.

Nobody knows whether the Gangjeong residents who are facing judicial action for their opposition to the construction of a naval base in their community are included on the list. The province has consistently called on the national government to grant them pardons.

광복절 특별사면 '강정주민' 포함여부 주목

법무부가 광복절 특별사면 대상자 심사를 마친 가운데 강정마을 주민들이 사면 대상자에 포함될 지 관심이 쏠리고 있습니다.

법무부는 어제(10일) 사면심사위원회를 개최해 광복절 특별사면과 특별감형 대상자 등에 대한 심사를 진행했습니다.

사면 대상자가 최대 2백만 명으로 예상되는 가운데 강정마을 주민들이 포함됐는지는 알려지지 않고 있습니다.

하지만 그동안 정치권과 제주도가 지속적으로 사면을 건의한 만큼, 강정주민들의 포함여부가 주목됩니다.
