Foreign investors cite ‘shifting policies and distorted information’

An association of foreign investors in Jeju caused an uproar Friday when it announced that, if the provincial government or another organization were to buy land its members own, the firms would pull out of the island.

The association held a press conference in the provincial council building. Representatives said that its members had decided to invest in the island and had bought land here for development projects based on the provincial government’s investment policies. They argued that the situation has become extremely risky and unpredictable for them. They blamed shifting policies, public sentiment that they say is based on distorted information, and opposition from civic groups.

The representatives brought up the major points of contention and attempted to refute each one. They discussed issues surrounding sprawling development, a buying spree of local land by Chinese investors, speculative land purchases, and job creation.

Berjaya Jeju Resort, (오삼) Osam Korea, and Baitong (신원) Xinyuan are among the members of the association.

이들은 오늘 오전 제주도의회 도민의 방에서 기자회견을 갖고 제주도의 부름을 받고, 제주도의 투자유치 정책에 따라 투자를 결심하고 사업부지를 매입했으나 변화되는 정책들과 왜곡된 여론, 시민사회단체들의 반대로 말미암아 지금은 한치 앞도 가늠하기 어려운 절체절명의 위기에 처해 있다며 이같이 주장했습니다.

특히 중국자본의 제주 땅 잠식과 투기성 문제, 고용창출 효과 등 일각에서 제기하고 있는 여러 문제에 대해 조목조목 반박하기도 했습니다.
