Safety inspection at Gama Oreum cave
Was used by Imperial Japanese as military bunker

Authorities will conduct a safety inspection in an island cave that was used by the Imperial Japanese as a military bunker during the occupation of Korea.

Concerns have been raised about the safety of visitors to the Gama Oreum cave.

Since the province closed the cave in 2013, wooden posts in it have rapidly deteriorated. Provincial officials will work with the Cultural Heritage Administration on the safety evaluation.

Officials will also try to determine the exact cause of a recent partial collapse within the cave.

제주특별자치도는 가마오름 동굴 진지 폐쇄 조치후 2년이 경과하면서 동굴진지 내부 갱목 부식이 빠르게 진행되고 있어 문화재청의 협조를 얻어 동굴진지 전반에 걸친 안전진단을 실시할 계획이라고 밝혔습니다.

또 동굴 진지 일부가 무너진 정확한 원인도 조사할 방침입니다.
