Memorial service for those killed at Seodal Oreum 65 years ago
Massacre took place shortly after Korean War broke out
Mourners gathered Thursday at (섯알오름) Seodal Oreum for the 65th memorial service for the victims of a massacre that took place there.
Shortly after the Korean War broke out, authorities rounded up hundreds of Moseulpo residents and placed them in what's known as preventative custody. They then took the prisoners to Seodal Oreum and executed them.
Two associations of victims' relatives hosted the ceremony. One of the groups takes care of the victims' tombs at (섯알오름) Seodal Oreum, while the other takes care of those at (만벵디) Manbaengdi. More than 200 mourners, including relatives and heads of local organizations, burned incense as they remembered those who were killed.
The Supreme Court recently upheld a ruling in favor of the relatives. The plaintiffs had sought government compensation for the deaths of their loved ones. Along with the ruling, the memorial service included an unveiling of a monument to celebrate the recovery of the victims’ honor.
