According to the Korea Airports Corporation, 820 flights coming to or departing the island were canceled through the end of July this year, which works out to an average of 3.8 per day. Aside from weather, the most common reason for the cancellations was safety checks that took longer than expected.

About 5,500 babies were born in Jeju last year, the third lowest total since 2004. The age of the women giving birth was up about 1.6 years over the same period to an average of nearly 32. The Halla Ilbo says that is the result of more women entering the workforce.

The South Korean military on Wednesday relaxed its highest-level combat readiness posture. It had initiated that readiness at the border due to heightened tensions with North Korea earlier this month.

Department store sales rebound in July
Yonhap is also reporting that South Korea's major department stores saw their sales rebound in July, while the decline in sales at discount outlet chains slowed.
