Slight increase in number of newborns in 2014
5,500 babies born in Jeju last year

There was a slight uptick last year in the number of new babies born in Jeju.

According to data released by Statistics Korea, 4,381 babies were born in Jeju City and 1,145 babies were born in Seogwipo last year, for a total of 5,526 newborns.

That’s 198 more than in 2013, but it is the third lowest total since 2004, when officials began compiling birthrate statistics for the nation’s major cities and provinces.

Most of the mothers were in their early thirties: there were 125 newborns for every 1,000 women in that age category. The next most common age groups were women in their late 20s and then in their late thirties.

On average, local women gave birth to their first child one year and five months after marriage. That’s the shortest period in the nation.

작년 제주서 5천525명 출생…소폭 상승

지난해 제주에서 모두 5천500여명의 신생아가 태어나 전년보다 조금 늘었습니다.

통계층이 발표한 지난해 출생 통계 지료에 따르면, 제주지역 출생아 수는 제주시 4천 381명, 서귀포시 1천 145명 등 모두 5천 526명으로 집계됐습니다.

이 같은 수치는 전년도인 2013년보다 198명 늘었지만, 시.도별 출산율을 집계하기 시작한 2004년 이후 역대 세 번째로 낮은 것입니다.

연령별 출산율을 보면 30대 초반에 출산한 비율이 여성 1천명당 125명으로 가장 많았고 20대 후반, 30대 후반이 뒤를 이었습니다.

특히 제주지역의 경우 첫째아 출산까지 부모의 평균 결혼생활기간이 1년 5개월로 전국에서 가장 짧았습니다.
