‘Case should be exhaustively investigated’
Newspaper reporter alleged to have assaulted Jeju City employee

Two organizations are asking for a thorough investigation into a newspaper reporter’s alleged assault of a high-ranking Jeju City government employee, who then reportedly attempted suicide.

In a Wednesday statement, the Jeju office of the Korean Federation of Trade Unions said the truth should be uncovered through an exhaustive police probe.

It also urged authorities to investigate the back-scratching relationship between local media outlets and the government.

‘The journalist should resign’


The Jeju branch of the National Union of Public Employees echoed those thoughts in its Wednesday statement, saying the case should provide momentum to the push to cut the cozy relationships long shared between the press and the government. It also called on the journalist to resign before law enforcement finishes and announces the results of the investigation.

It added that it would launch a boycott of the newspaper and try and get advertisers to cut their ties with it if the publisher and the reporter fail to act in a quote/unquote “proper way.”

민주노총 제주본부는 오늘 성명을 통해 이번 폭행사건의 진실은 경찰조사를 통해 철저히 밝혀져야 한다고 주장했습니다.

특히 더 나아가 지방언론과 지방행정의 유착관계에 대해서도 철저한 조사가 필요하다고 촉구했습니다.

제주특별자치도 공무원노동조합도 오늘 성명을 내고 이번 폭행 사건이 그동안의 권언유착 관계를 정리하는 계기가 돼야 한다며 폭행사건 물의를 일으킨 언론사 기자는 사법당국의 사건 조사 발표 전에 기자직에서 스스로 사퇴해야 한다고 강조했습니다.

또 해당 언론사와 당사자의 태도에 따라 신문 불매 운동과 광고협찬 중지의 대응을 취하겠다고 밝혔습니다.
