Breakwaters are a popular location for fishing. But, be careful, a spate of accidents has authorities saying people must be more safety-aware. Joseph Kim has more.
Fishing near breakwaters can be a thrilling experience… as you can get very close to the waves and maybe get lucky with a big catch.

Some fishermen go from breakwater to breakwater, looking for the perfect spot to reel out their fishing rod… This is extremely dangerous… more so if you’re under the influence.

The tetrapods are about 120 centimeters apart, so beginners can easily get into accidents jumping around on them. Sometimes they’re are covered in seaweed. If you step on those, you’re sure to fall.

Last Tuesday (August 25) at Hwasoon (화순) Port in Seogwipo... a 49-year-old fisherman, identified only by his surname Kim, slipped and fell 7 meters down from a breakwater. Another man who was fishing had to be rescued after he slipped off a breakwater.

If under the influence of alcohol, please refrain from going near breakwaters. Always watch where you step and bend down when moving on them. Also, you must stay away when there are strong winds and high waves.
