Not enough mandarin oranges have been falling naturally this year, so farmers have been forced to manually remove substandard fruit from their trees. A lot end up being thrown away through this thinning process, but now even these mandarins are becoming a source of income as they are being utilized to make juice. Mike Laidman reports.

Fruit thinning is underway at this mandarin orange orchard in Namwon-eup, Seogwipo.
The mandarins that are either too big, too small, or bruised get removed by hand.

But the thinned fruit are not thrown away. They can in fact be used right away as they haven’t been sprayed with pesticides. They require no rinsing and so are kept.

Unripe mandarins sold for juice at over \2,000/kg

The oranges are frozen to a temperature of minus 20 degrees, and then put through a pulp extracting machine to extract their juice.

Even though these mandarins are unripe, farmers can still sell them for over 2,000 won per kilogram.

Previously, they would have been thrown away, but now they are becoming an extra source of income for farmers.

Our profits are up 30%. If you don’t thin the mandarins, the trees don’t bear as much fruit the following year. By thinning the small oranges we allow for the remaining oranges to grow more, and still make a profit.

Thinning has been especially important for the orchards this year because not enough mandarins fell naturally in the months of June and July.

In previous years, farmers had been hesitant to cull any of their fruit due to potential financial losses, but now they are able to make money off what would otherwise be waste.

Normally, the thinned fruit is just thrown away. Now, though, it can be used to make orange juice and other processed products, which creates more revenue for farmers.

열매 솎기한 감귤은 버려지고 있는데 친환경 열매는 기능성 건강음료 등 여러가지 가공제품으로 만들어서 부가적인 소득을 올려주고 있습니다.

Apart from size or small blemishes, what were otherwise good fruit were being thrown away. Now, they have found a new use as juice, meaning more money for farmers and a win-win situation for the whole industry.
