This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at one place in Jeju City that you should be familiar with -- Sarabong Peak and its nearby public park. It features a beautiful view, a museum, sports facilities and a whole lot more.
Overlooking Jeju City port and the International Ferry Terminal is an unassuming volcanic cone which, it turns out, is a hidden jewel of the city.

Geonip-dong, Jeju City

Sarabong Peak is located in the Geonip neighborhood of old Jeju City. The horseshoe-shaped oreum is topped with pine trees. And as it is located by the ocean, it has a beautiful view of the city and its marine backdrop to the north.

But it’s not just a neighborhood gem. People from all over the city know and love Sarabong and its park.

Equipped with sports facilities, museum, library

There are a variety of public athletic facilities to take advantage of, including a 5-kilometer network of walking paths, the usual complement of exercise equipment, a soccer field, and more.

And this being Jeju... there’s a Jeju Olle walking trail in the area. Course No. 18 runs right past Sarabong’s north face.

Sunset view from peak among Jeju’s ‘top 10 highlights’

This place is famous with locals looking to find respite from the summer heat. There’s nearly always a cool breeze blowing in off the water in the summer evenings. The view of the sunset from Sarabong is also said to the one of the top 10 highlights of Jeju.

Other things to do and see at Sarabong include Jeju National Museum -- one of the island’s best -- as well as the Jeju Youth Center, Woodang Library, Borim Temple and more.
