First litchi harvest in Jeju
Red berries usually grown in more tropical climates

Local farmers will soon be able to grow a kind of fruit traditionally found in tropical and subtropical regions.

The litchi was introduced from China in 2010. Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services has grown them on a trial basis and it has now made the first harvest of the red berries, both on the island and in the country.

The average sugar content was 19.7 degrees Brix, four degrees higher than imports. Tasters say the texture was good, as well.

All of the litchis currently sold in the domestic market are imported from Vietnam, China, and other countries.

아열대 과수 '리치' 제주서 첫 결실

아열대 과수작물인 리치를 제주에서도 재배할 수 있는 길이 열렸습니다.

제주특별자치도 농업기술원은 지난 2010년 중국에서 리치 묘목을 가져와 시험 재배한 결과 5년 만에 첫 수확을 거뒀습니다.

리치의 당도는 19.7 브릭스로 수입산보다 4브릭스 이상 높고, 식감도 좋아 품질 면에서 우수한 것으로 조사됐습니다.

현재 국내에서 유통되는 리치는 베트남과 중국 등에서 전량 수입되고 있으며, 국내에서 재배에 성공한 것은 이번이 처음입니다.
