Recreated historical building complex opens to public
Inn for merchants, other structures from time of Kim Man-deok
Provincial officials on Friday opened to the public a recreation of a merchants’ inn complex that stood hundreds of years ago during the time of historic business magnate and altruist (김만덕) Kim Man-deok.
Major construction finished in April, but the provincial government says it could only now open up the site to visitors after putting the final touches on the (건입동) Geonip-dong project - the signs are up and the fire extinguishing facilities are installed.
The inn complex sits on a 2,000 square-meter plot of land. It has eight buildings, including an exhibition hall, an inn for traveling merchants, and a maintenance building. Three-point-five billion won was spent on it.
The site includes a number of items that depict different facets of life during Kim’s lifetime. She lived from 1739 to 1812. On display are a well, a platform for earthen jars, a vegetable garden, and tools.
Admission is free. It is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
