Outdoor-grown mandarin crop estimated at 539,000 tons
4.2% larger than original estimate

Compared to their first estimate earlier in the year, experts now say this season’s outdoor-grown mandarin orange crop will be somewhat larger than first thought.

Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services and a fruit survey committee have completed their second round of inspections at about 450 local farms. Based on what they observed, they say this year’s crop will come in at about 539,000 tons.

That’s 21,000 tons, or 4.2 percent, above the first estimate made in May.

The experts attribute the change to the lower than average temperatures we’ve had, which, in turn, have caused less fruit to naturally fall from the trees.

They expect that the ratio of small fruit will increase this year, especially at farms in the (남원) Namwon region.

올해산 노지감귤은 53만 9천 톤이 생산될 것으로 조사됐습니다.

이는 지난 5월 실시된 1차 관측조사때보다 9.6%, 2만 1천톤이 증가한 수치입니다.

농업기술원은 올해 6월과 7월 저온현상으로 자연적으로 열매가 떨어지는 생리낙과가 적어 예상생산량이 늘어났고 서귀포 남원지역을 중심으로 지름이 작은 소과비율이 증가할 것으로 분석했습니다.
