Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Outdoor-grown mandarin crop estimated at 539,000 tons
  • Outdoor-grown mandarin crop estimated at 539,000 tons 4.2% larger than original estimate Compared to their first estimate earlier in the year, experts now say this season’s outdoor-grown mandarin orange crop will be somewhat larger than first thought. Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services and a fruit survey committee have completed their second round of inspections at about 450 local farms. Based on what they observed, they say this year’s crop will come in at about 539,000 tons. That’s 21,000 tons, or 4.2 percent, above the first estimate made in May. The experts attribute the change to the lower than average temperatures we’ve had, which, in turn, have caused less fruit to naturally fall from the trees. They expect that the ratio of small fruit will increase this year, especially at farms in the (남원) Namwon region.

  • Tourist arrivals top 9 million
  • Tourist arrivals top 9 million Up 8.7% compared to last year Tourist arrivals hit the nine-million mark over the weekend. The Jeju Provincial Tourism Association reports that about 9,025,000 people had visited the island through Sunday. That’s 8.7 percent more than at the same point last year, when the tally was 8.3 million. International arrivals are down about 25 percent. Worries over the mainland outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome prompted many non-Koreans to cancel their travel plans. A 21 percent surge in domestic arrivals more than made up for those losses, though. 7.3 million Koreans had visited the island this year through Sunday. The nine-million milestone was hit 20 days earlier than last year. Assuming the trend continues, officials project the yearly total will again surpass ten million.

  • KCTV: Jeju Air ‘No Longer a Budget Airline’
  • Jeju Air recently announced plans to change its name and close its Jeju headquarters, stirring a lot of opposition. The airline also says it will start charging extra for more of its services. Critics say the once-budget carrier is low-cost no more. Mike Laidman KCTV When Jeju Air began operations about a decade ago, it's aim was to satisfy the needs of the budget-conscious traveler. But today, the low-cost carrier charges extra for almost all of its services. To reserve a seat, passengers must pay an additional 3,000 to 30,000 won. In-flight meals on international flights are paid for separately, which can mean up to another 20,000 won. When one adds up all the little extra fees, there’s little difference to the price one would pay compared to a non-budget airline. [INTERVIEW] Lee Il-ho, Chung Chan-mi / Gyeonggi Province I don’t think there’s much of a price difference between budget and regular airlines. When you add in the extra fees for seat reservations and inflight meals, they're about the same. You even have to pay extra when purchasing tickets offline. IN> A surcharge of 5,000 won is added per person when buying tickets at the airport. OUT> And, in a first for a domestic airline, Jeju Air also plans to add charges for reservations made over the phone. [camera] Moon Ho-seong The airline says it’s part of an effort to encourage people to reserve online and make phone lines less busy. But for passengers without smartphones or computers, this only means they will be forced to pay extra. [INTERVIEW] Son Young-geun / Seoul It’s inconvenient for older people who aren't as comfortable using the Internet. [INTERVIEW] Yeo In-hyeon / Daegu This is not a low-cost carrier. They charged extra because I bought my ticket at the airport. Before that, it was 72,100 won just for the ticket. In total it was 77,000 won. That’s not a budget airline. When the company started operations, it said it would do all it could to reduce costs. [reporter] Mike Laidman But now with all the extra fees it charges, Jeju Air is not living up to its budget-airline roots. Mike Laidman, KCTV

  • KCTV: School Bus Safety ‘Still Lacking’
  • Earlier this year, a revision was made to the Road Traffic Act regarding school and private academy buses… and it was named the Serimi Law (세림이법)... in honor of a 3-year-old girl who died two years ago, after she was run over by a daycare center school bus. This has strengthened regulations on the operation of school buses across the nation. Has it made a difference locally? Suejin Choi reports. [slug] Near Halla Elementary School School is over for the day… and private cram school or hagwon buses start lining up in front of one elementary school. As soon as the police appear, bus drivers hurriedly start to check if all the children on board have fastened their seatbelts. [INTERVIEW] Hagwon bus driver (The children aren’t wearing their seatbelts. That’s a violation of the law. Please show me your driver’s license.) Yes, I should have checked. I did tell them to buckle up, but I didn’t check. The Road Traffic Act on school buses was revised earlier this year… requiring alterations be made to school buses so that they are painted yellow and have swing-out stop signs… but some buses clearly have yet to comply with the new rules. [INTERVIEW] Hagwon bus driver (One of our buses has been altered, but) I didn’t ask why this one hasn’t. I just assumed we had time until the end of the year to make the changes. [camera] Park Byeong-joon A crackdown officially began at the start of September, and on the first two days, police charged 12 school buses of violating the new law. ### C.G IN The revision stipulates that school bus drivers can only start their vehicles after confirming that all children have fastened their seat belts, and for 15-seater or larger vehicles, a guardian must be present on the bus. ### C.G OUT When on board, the safety of our children lies in the hands of school bus drivers. [INTERVIEW] Park Min-gyeong / Jeju Seobu Police Station We’re making sure every child on school buses has their seat belt fastened. We are also looking at whether drivers make safety checks every time a child boards and exits the bus, and if the bus is properly registered. [REPORTER] Suejin Choi Now is the time to renew our commitment to road safety... and prevent future accidents that could affect our children. Suejin Choi, KCTV.

  • Search continues for missing At least ten dead after Dolgorae capsized Saturday Local authorities continue to search for those still missing from a fishing boat that capsized in Chujado waters over the weekend. The Jeju office of the Ministry of Public Safety says about 70 ships are involved in the search, including its vessels and privately-owned fishing boats, as well as nine aircraft. 25 divers are involved, including nine members of a special Ministry of Public Safety and Security team that specialize in underwater recovery of bodies.
