Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Dolgorae recovered Wednesday
  • Dolgorae recovered Wednesday Investigators will inspect boat at Shinyang Port The Dolgorae was salvaged Wednesday, four days after the fishing boat capsized. The Jeju office of the Ministry of Public Safety says a barge equipped with a large crane was brought Wednesday afternoon to the Chuja Island waters where the boat overturned, and that it was able to pull the vessel to shore. A lack of major damage on the bottom of the hull has some investigators saying it could have been high waves that overturned it. Authorities will transport the Dolgorae to (신양) Shinyang Port in Upper Chuja Island for a thorough examination to determine the cause of the wreck and see if there is any evidence that the boat’s structure had been modified in some way.

  • KCTV: Search Continues for the Missing
  • Search efforts continue for those still missing from the Dolgorae. Maritime police have decided to mobilize trawlers to use their dragnets in search of the bodies. Inclement weather conditions, however, have delayed the efforts. Lee Hee-jung joins me in the studio with more. [slug] Search continues for the missing Search operations continue for the people still missing from the capsized fishing boat Dolgorae, but no progress has been made, officials said Tuesday. [slug] No development since 10th body found Sunday The Korea Coast Guard expanded its scope of operations adding patrol ships and trawlers to its rescue team but have made no headway since the tenth body was found on Sunday. Residents of Chuja Island, the navy and police also continue to search the shoreline, but no other updates have been reported. Maritime police said they decided to add local fishing boats familiar with the waters around Chuja Island, to speed up their search operations. And trawlers with dragnets will also be mobilized. [SYNC] Lee Pyeong-heon / Korea Coast Guard, Jeju Regional HQ There could be bodies caught underwater, so we decided, with the maritime ministry, to add 16 fishing trawlers with dragnets to our search operations around Chuja Island. [slug] Bad weather conditions delay search mission It’s also possible that the missing people may have drifted underwater due to the strong sea current, so coast guards have requested that additional search operations be held around Jindo and Wando. But the search is being delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions. [camera] Hyeon Gwang-hoon With high wave advisories issued along the waters west of Chuja Island, much of the rescue operations will depend on the weather. Forecasters say we will continue to see poor weather conditions until Thursday. [reporter] Lee Hee-jung Meanwhile, preparations have been made to salvage the Dolgorae for further investigation on the cause of the accident but again, this could be delayed unless weather conditions improve.

  • KCTV: ‘Keeping Wind Power Profits Local’
  • To prevent huge outflows of profits from the wind power business on the island, local villages will be given priority in running onshore wind farms from now on. As for offshore wind turbines that can potentially damage the environment, Jeju Energy Corporation has been designated to publically manage offshore wind farms and set the locations for new ones.
