To prevent huge outflows of profits from the wind power business on the island, local villages will be given priority in running onshore wind farms from now on. As for offshore wind turbines that can potentially damage the environment, Jeju Energy Corporation has been designated to publically manage offshore wind farms and set the locations for new ones. Joseph Kim has more.
There are 101 wind turbines in Jeju, located across 17 districts including Gujwa(구좌) and Hallim(한림).

Over the past decade, Jeju’s winds have helped generate over 250 billion won in the new and renewable energy business. However, 80 percent of the profits have been leaving the island.

To prevent further outflows of profits from the wind energy business, Jeju residents will be taking the lead in onshore wind farm businesses from now on.

Local residents, villages to get priority

Jeju City has announced that for the remaining 150-megawatt-capacity wind farm business on the island, local residents and villages will be given priority over private non-Jeju companies.

Equity sharing among villagers will allow local communities to share profits made by the wind farms.

Regarding the remaining 150 MW, we will restrict large-scale development. Local villages, companies and the Jeju Energy Corporation will be given priority.

"나머지 150MW에 대해서는 대규모 개발을 제한합니다. 마을회나 향토기업, 제주에너지공사가 개발참여하도록 할 계획입니다."

In the case of offshore wind farms, which have the potential to damage the environment, Jeju Energy Corporation’s role as overseer has been expanded.

JEC to assume more responsibilities

Previously, private companies were able to start wind power businesses on their own accord but now they will need approval by the JEC, as the corporation will be in charge of managing the allocation of wind farms and conducting environmental impact evaluations, as well as collecting public opinion on the matter.

The latest move is expected to reduce disputes between private investors and villages, as well as reduce environmental pollution.

[INTERVIEW]
Lee Sung-gu / CEO, Jeju Energy Corporation
I believe we will be able to get things built quicker. As a public corporation, the local community will have less doubt in our work and we’ll be able to speed up the administrative process.

The Jeju Provincial Government will now establish its plan to spur public investment for future wind power businesses... and create a foundation aimed at supplying 57 percent of the island’s electricity demand by 2030.
