Existing airport ‘unlikely to close’
Two alternatives for expanding airport infrastructure being considered

While a final decision on how to expand airport infrastructure won’t be announced until November, it likely won’t include the closing of the existing facility.

A Korea Aerospace University professor said that option was taken off the table. (김병종) Kim Byeong-jong made the remarks Tuesday morning at the Farmers’ and Fishermen’s Center. He was speaking at the second presentation on the results of a feasibility study on airport infrastructure expansion.

Kim said it was rare for a city to take that step because doing so would have an instant negative impact on the local economy. He added that the provincial government has asked the group researching the issue to exclude ideas that call for the current facility to be closed.

The group now has only two choices from which to make a final selection. One is to build additional runways at the current airport with a capacity similar to what already exist. The other is to build a new airport and operate both.

오는 11월 제주공항인프라 확충 방안이 발표될 예정인 가운데 현재 공항은 어떤 식으로든 유지될 전망입니다.

오늘(8일) 제주도농어업인회관에서 열린 ‘제주 공항인프라 확충 사전타당성 검토용역 2차 도민설명회에서 연구용역을 맡은 김병종 한국항공대 교수는 앞으로 제시될 확충 방안에 기존공항을 폐쇄한 후 대규모 신공항을 건설하는 방안은 배제할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

김 교수는 기존 공항을 폐쇄한 사례가 드물로 폐쇄에 따른 지역경제 부정적 영향이 즉각적으로 발생할 것으로 예상된다며 최근 제주특별자치도 역시 현재 공항 폐쇄안은 배제해 달라는 의견을 제시했다고 말했습니다.

이에 따라 향후 제주 공항인프라 확충 대안은 현 공항에 현재 수준의 활주로 1개 추가 건설하는 방안과 현 공항을 유지하면서 제2의 공항을 건설하는 방안으로 압축됐습니다.
