Are you familiar with the floorball? It’s a type of floor hockey and Jeju recently hosted its first tournament. The players included a group of Korean adoptees from Sweden who took the opportunity to get to learn more about their motherland and build new friendships. Lee Hee-jung has more.
Black hair. Brown eyes.
He may look like a typical Korean, but his passport tells us he in fact Swedish.

His name... is Magnos (매그노스). His Korean name by birth is 민영훈.
As an adoptee, he was sent to Sweden when he was just 9 months old.

Today, he is the leader of his floorball team… In fact, 9 of the 14 members on his team are Korean adoptees in Sweden, just like himself.

When he heard about Jeju’s first floorball tournament, he applied in a heartbeat, paying for his own flight to come here.

Before arriving in Korea, the adoptees each made an effort to learn more about the country and they even chose a Korean name for their team… 화랑.

Although things can get rough on the floorball court, they relish each moment of their time here.

And off the court, rivals become friends.

This year’s floorball tournament was held on September 5th and 6th (last weekend) and over 1 thousand people from 10 countries participated, including the floorball players, their families and staff members. The event helped to promote the sport in Korea and set the stage for international friendships to blossom.

Jeju is known in this part of the world as an “island of peace,” but it is still unfamiliar to people from Northern Europe. I hope this has brought people closer together through their common interest in floorball and sports.

The first floorball tournament in Jeju brought people of different backgrounds together, and gave some the chance to visit their motherland. It has not only opened the doors to the sport here, but to many budding friendships in years to come.
