Second attempt to ship illegal mandarins uncovered
Authorities fine violator \3.9m, dispose of fruit

Authorities have uncovered the second case this year of someone in Seogwipo attempting to illegally ship unripe mandarin oranges.

An investigative team found the violation Tuesday at a fruit sorting facility in (서홍동) Seohong-dong. A farmer was planning to ship 3.9 tons of unripe early-harvested fruit.

The sugar content of the fruit was between 5.8 and 6.1 degrees Brix. That’s far lower than the official standard sugar content of the variety. An ordinance on mandarin production and circulation pegs the standard at 8 degrees Brix.

The inspectors fined the farmer 3.9 million won and they will destroy all the fruit.

With Chuseok just a few days away, officials will be keeping a closer eye on mandarin shipments to make sure all of the fruit is cleared for sale.

비상품 감귤을 유통하려 한 행위가 서귀포에서 또 적발됐습니다.

서귀포시 감귤 단속반은 그제(15일) 서귀포시 서홍동에 있는 한 선과장에서 극조생 미숙 감귤 3.9톤을 유통하려고 보관하던
감귤농가를 적발했다고 밝혔습니다.

적발된 감귤은 당도 5.8에서 6.1브릭스 사이로 감귤생산유통 조례에 따른 극조생 감귤상품 기준인 8브릭스보다 한참 낮은 것입니다.

단속반은 해당 농가에 대해 과태료 390만원을 부과하고 적발된 비상품 감귤을 전량 폐기하기로 했습니다.

이와함께 추석 명절을 앞두고 비상품 감귤 유통 행위가 늘어날 것으로 보고, 민간인 단속반을 투입하는 등 단속을 강화할 계획입니다.
