Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • Inspectors at wholesale markets nationwide Will be on lookout for substandard mandarin oranges As part of those efforts, local inspectors will be assigned to the major wholesale markets around the country. The provincial government says it will station fruit inspectors at ten wholesale markets, including those in Seoul, Busan and Daegu. They will begin work on October first. The inspectors will be monitoring the citrus shipped from the island to ensure none is artificially colored or substandard in quality. Any that is will be returned to the sender. In addition, the provincial government is planning to form a special investigative team to crack down on illegal fruit shipments.   • Second attempt to ship illegal mandarins uncovered Authorities fine violator \3.9m, dispose of fruit Authorities have uncovered the second case this year of someone in Seogwipo attempting to illegally ship unripe mandarin oranges. An investigative team found the violation Tuesday at a fruit sorting facility in (서홍동) Seohong-dong. A farmer was planning to ship 3.9 tons of unripe early-harvested fruit. The sugar content of the fruit was between 5.8 and 6.1 degrees Brix. That’s far lower than the official standard sugar content of the variety. An ordinance on mandarin production and circulation pegs the standard at 8 degrees Brix. The inspectors fined the farmer 3.9 million won and they will destroy all the fruit. With Chuseok just a few days away, officials will be keeping a closer eye on mandarin shipments to make sure all of the fruit is cleared for sale. 비상품 감귤 유통 시도 또 적발 비상품 감귤을 유통하려 한 행위가 서귀포에서 또 적발됐습니다. 서귀포시 감귤 단속반은 그제(15일) 서귀포시 서홍동에 있는 한 선과장에서 극조생 미숙 감귤 3.9톤을 유통하려고 보관하던 감귤농가를 적발했다고 밝혔습니다. 적발된 감귤은 당도 5.8에서 6.1브릭스 사이로 감귤생산유통 조례에 따른 극조생 감귤상품 기준인 8브릭스보다 한참 낮은 것입니다. 단속반은 해당 농가에 대해 과태료 390만원을 부과하고 적발된 비상품 감귤을 전량 폐기하기로 했습니다. 이와함께 추석 명절을 앞두고 비상품 감귤 유통 행위가 늘어날 것으로 보고, 민간인 단속반을 투입하는 등 단속을 강화할 계획입니다.

  • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. Another week passes, a few more movies open, and I tell you whether or not they’re worth your time and hard-earned cash. This week, two dramas, one a thriller, the other action. So what connects them? Sub-par reviews, for the most part. But before you write both of them off, each features a couple well-known faces, and if you’re looking for something to burn away a few hours this weekend, you could probably do worse. Plus there’s always caramel popcorn… Here are The Truth About Emanuel and Kidnapping Mr. Heineken. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] The Truth About Emanuel (2014, Francesca Gregorini) A troubled girl becomes preoccupied with her new neighbor. It’s amazing how hard it is to predict how good a movie will be, even based on all the information to which we have access. I’ll admit the title to this one does nothing for me, but the trailer, actors, and premise all had me thinking that this was going to be a pretty solid little thriller. I have to admit I haven't seen it yet, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. With middling reviews, there’s really no compelling reason to recommend The Truth About Emanuel. Let’s see what’s going on here. Emanuel is a troubled girl who becomes preoccupied with her mysterious new neighbor, a woman who bears a striking resemblance to her dead mother. In offering to baby-sit Linda's newborn, Emanuel unwittingly enters a fragile, fictional world, of which she becomes the gatekeeper. The problem with the movie is that it’s a little too wild from the get-go, too confused and over-the-top. There are some positive audience reviews floating around out there, though, so give it a chance if you’re curious. [Slug CG] Kidnapping Mr. Heineken (2015, Daniel Alfredson) The true story of beer tycoon Alfred Heineken’s kidnapping. Here’s another example of an interesting idea that just didn’t pan out the way people hoped. Kidnapping Mr. Heineken tells the inside story of the planning, execution, rousing aftermath and ultimate downfall of the kidnappers of beer tycoon Alfred "Freddy" Heineken, which resulted in the largest ransom ever paid for an individual. The issue here is that despite the exciting, real-life story, the movie is just too predictable and generic. There’s great potential here to really follow through with the source material and present something new and exciting, but that just doesn’t happen. Instead, we’re left with a flat, half-hearted version of what could have been.

Seoul has reportedly balked at funding the initiative, however, unless there is a specific short-term plan. 2. Economy Public intrusion into private market? The Halla Ilbo is also reporting that a firm called J-Creation, launched a bottled water product this month that uses seawater filtered through the island’s volcanic bedrock. This comes as the JPDC continues to develop a similar product. Yonhap 1. Nation Body of another Dolgorae victim recovered Yonhap is reporting that the body of another passenger missing from a capsized fishing boat was recovered Wednesday, raising the death toll to 13. Three people who were on the Dolgorae were rescued by another fishing boat. Five others are still missing. 2. North Korea Kerry warns N. Korea of ‘severe consequences’ U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry warned Wednesday that North Korea will face "severe consequences" if it forges ahead with irresponsible provocations, a day after Pyongyang apparently threatened a nuclear test.

  • In Korea, you have Pororo (뽀로로)... and in Brazil, there’s Monica. The popular cartoon character that has been around for more than 50 years… is now on display at a special exhibition that incorporates her with famous artworks from around the world. Suejin Choi has more. Often referred to as the ‘Dutch Mona Lisa’… ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ is one of the most famous paintings in the world… and here at this exhibition, it is reborn as… ‘Monica with a Rabbit Earring’. Her big eyes and cheeky smile add a friendly touch to the masterpiece. [slug] ‘Masterpieces with Monica’ Through Nov. 29 at Jeju Museum of Art Visitors get to see masterpieces reinterpreted by the Walt Disney of South America… Brazilian cartoonist Mauricio de Sousa (마우리시우 지 소우자) at a special exhibition currently underway at the Jeju Museum of Art. 51 artworks - in cartoon form - are on display. The exhibition is called ‘Masterpieces with Monica’ and it is being held to commemorate the Museum’s sixth anniversary.   • ‘Come to Jeju by ferry!’ 70,000+ tourists arrived on vessels from mainland last month Local authorities are trying to persuade more people from the mainland to visit Jeju by ferry. The province and the Jeju Provincial Tourism Association set up booths in the (호남) Honam region to promote the island as a tourist destination. They are working in a cooperation with ship operators that offer Jeju service and the Korea Railroad Corporation. This comes as one ferry resumed operations on a Jeju-Yeosu route this month, and a new route will open between the island and (목포) Mokpo next month. More than 70,000 tourists came to Jeju on mainland ferries last month. That’s 10.6 percent more than in August 2014. 뱃길 이용 제주관광 마케팅 본격 제주-여수 카페리 여객선 운항 재개를 계기로 뱃길을 이용한 제주관광 마케팅이 본격화되고 있습니다. 제주도와 관광협회는 오늘 호남지역에서 제주운항 선사와 한국철도공사 등과 연계한 현장 로드홍보에 나섰다고 밝혔습니다. 이는 제주-여수 카페리 여객선 재취항과 다음달 제주-목포 항로의 신규선박 취항에 따른 것입니다. 한편 지난달 국내 연안여객선을 이용해 제주를 찾은 관광객은 7만 여 명으로 지난해 같은 기간보다 10.6% 증가했습니다.

  • This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at the activities Jeju National Museum is offering visitors over the upcoming Chuseok festival, one of Korea’s major national holidays. [Report] Nearly a quarter of a million people will be visiting Jeju during Chuseok, the traditional autumn harvest festival which this year is from Sept. 26th to the 28th. Many islanders will be returning home to honor their ancestors, while others will come as tourists. [Slug CG] Special activities at Jeju National Museum Sept. 26-28 Chuseok is traditionally a time when farmers would be able to relax after a long summer toiling in the fields. The thanksgiving holiday would allow them to enjoy the fruits of their labor. [Slug CG] jeju.museum.go.kr/html/en In keeping with this tradition, Jeju National Museum -- one of the island’s oldest and most representative museums -- will offer a wide range of hands-on cultural events and activities for the whole family. The curators have designed this three-day event to help both domestic and international visitors to understand and appreciate traditional Chuseok customs, as well as to enjoy a pleasant day at the museum. [Slug CG] Traditional games, food, activities Activities include centuries-old games such as Korean shuttlecock kicking, tuho arrow throwing, top spinning, and more.   • Free meals during Chuseok holidays Lunches for children at risk for not getting enough to eat Children who are at-risk for not getting enough to eat will be given free meals during the Chuseok holidays. The provincial government says more than 7,630 children will receive the meals during the period when school cafeterias are closed. The province has organized a collaborative system between local children's centers, lunch providers, women’s societies, and municipal governments to make sure the kids get full meals. 道, 추석연휴 결식아동 맞춤 급식지원 제주특별자치도가 추석연휴기간 동안 결식아동들을 위한 맞춤형 급식지원을 실시합니다. 제주도는 아동급식 지원 대상자 7천 630여 명에 대해 기존 급식이 이뤄지지 않는 추석 연휴동안 특별 지원을 진행한다고 밝혔습니다. 이에 따라 지역아동센터와 도시락지원업체, 읍면동 부녀회 등 각 행정시에 맞게 지원 체계를 구축하고, 중식과 부식 등을 제공합니다.
