Chuseok visitors return home with fond memories
Jeju International Airport has been swamped with holiday visitors returning home, many with fond memories of their Chuseok holiday with their families. After the relatively short holiday and pleasant family reunion, it’s difficult for some to say goodbye. At the departure gate, families hug and wave as they see off their loved ones.

2. Tourism
2014 island tourism income unclear
Statistics on Jeju’s tourism income are largely different depending on each agency. Thus the provincial government cannot officially announce the island’s tourism income for 2014. Instead, it only has a tentative calculation of 8.91 trillion won. Officials say a plan to improve the situation should be in place by the end of the year.

Province, Bank of Korea discuss tourism accounting
The Jemin Ilbo also reported on the announcement by the provincial government and the JTO regarding problems calculating last year’s total tourism income. As each agency has its own method, it has proven difficult for the agencies to agree on an official number. To establish a standard process, the local government and the Bank of Korea are reportedly discussing the matter.

2. Environment
Electricity sources, rates ‘should be competitive’
To ensure that Jeju is living up to its obligations as a Carbon Free Island, experts have suggested that local electricity rates should be “competitive” ahead of any further distribution of new electric cars. To this end, it’s been recommended that the province develop a variety of new and renewable energy sources, including wind, solar and tidal power. Experts also say Jeju should establish sufficient infrastructure for the generation of electricity.

2. Society
Despite special law, more child abuse reported
Punishments for child abuse were strengthened a year ago, but a new report has found that the number of child abuse cases in Jeju have actually increased. Three-hundred and sixty-nine child abuse cases were reported last year, an increase of 80% from 2013. Since most children were abused by their own parents, criminal conviction rates were low.
