High rate of new business openings
4.4% more last year; national average: 3.8%

Compared to the rest of the country, new businesses are opening up at a faster rate here on the island.

According to tentative research results released by the provincial government, there were over 53,900 registered businesses in Jeju last year, 4.4 percent more than the year before. They employed about 235,000 people, and that was four percent more than in 2013.

On average, the nation had just 3.8 percent more businesses. Experts say that points to a relatively robust start-up market on the island.

Leading the way were new businesses in the construction, real estate, leasing service, accommodation, and restaurant sectors.

35.9 percent of local business owners were in their 50s, 31 percent in their 40s, and 17 percent were at least 60 years old. Two businesses were owned by teenagers.

제주도내 사업체수 증가율이 전국 평균을 웃돌고 있습니다.

제주특별자치도가 잠정 발표한 지난해 사업체조사 결과에 따르면
사업체수는 5만 3천 900여개에 종사자수는 23만 5천여명으로
전년에 비해 사업체수는 4.4 %, 종사자는 4% 증가했습니다.

특히 사업체수 전국 평균 증가율이 3.8%인 점을 감안하면
제주에서의 창업이 비교적 활발히 이뤄지고 있다는 분석입니다.

이 가운데 최근 제주경제사정을 반영해 건설업이나 부동산업, 임대업,
숙박, 음식점이 크게 증가한 것으로 조사됐습니다.

업체별 대표자의 연령대를 보면 50대가 전체의 35.9%를 차지해 가장 많고
40대 31%, 60대 이상 17%를 보였으며 10대 창업도 2군데가 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.
