‘Civil service exam’ for children at Jeju Mokgwana
50 openings for elementary school students

This coming Sunday, children will be able to go to Jeju Mokgwana to sit for a test based on the civil service exam that was given during the Joseon Dynasty.

Organized by the Jeju City municipal administration, the exam will be made up of word problems based on the Tamna Sullyeokdo (탐라 순력도), which is a picture book from 1702 that details local culture, food, and history. Examinees will have to don the traditional hats, called (유건) “yugeon,” and full-dress attire, called (도포) “dopo,” that Confucian students of years past wore. Any elementary student in grades four through six is welcome to apply. The city will accept the first 50 that sign up by October seventh.

City officials will grant certificates to six of the test-takers, including one judged to have performed the best.

어린이 과거시험이 오는 11일 제주목관아에서 열립니다.

제주시가 마련한 이번 행사는 과거 선비들이 입었던 유건과 도포를 입고 탐라순력도 내용을 시제로 서술형으로 실시됩니다. 참가 대상은 초등학교 4, 5, 6학년이며 오는 7일까지 50명을 선착순으로 접수합니다.

제주시는 행사 당일 심사를 거쳐 장원 1명을 비롯해 6명을 선발해 상장을 수여할 계획입니다.
