Seoul reviewing Jeju-Honam undersea tunnel
High-speed rail system study to be released this month

The central government is reviewing the viability of a proposed undersea high-speed rail system project linking Jeju to Honam, leaving some people to speculate whether it may one day become a reality.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Jeju-Honam undersea railway system project is under consideration as part of a third national railroad network. The plan is based on research carried out by the Korea Transport Institute dealing with the development of the nation’s railroad industry.

Based on the results of the study, which are scheduled to be released late this month, the Transport Ministry plans to make a final decision on whether a high-speed rail link with the mainland will be included in the third national railroad network. Seoul will also consult related organizations and the Jeju provincial government.

With an estimated budget of 14.6 trillion won, the undersea tunnel system would extend some 167-kilometers from the mainland at Mokpo, connect Bogildo Island, Chujado Island and emerge at Jeju.

정부가 제주와 호남을 잇는 해저고속철도 사업 타당성을 검토하고
있어 최종 사업 추진 여부가 주목됩니다.

국토교통부에 따르면 한국교통연구원이 수행중인 제3차 국가철도망구축계획 수립과 철도산업발전방안 연구용역에 제주-호남 해저고속철도 사업이 포함됐습니다.

국토교통부는 이달 말 나오는 용역 결과를 바탕으로
제주도 등 관계기관과 협의를 거쳐 제주-호남 해저고속철도 사업을
제3차 국가철도망구추계획에 포함 여부를 최종 결정할 계획입니다.

제주 호남 해저고속철도 사업은 전남 목포와 해남, 보길도, 추자도, 제주도 등
167km 구간을 연결하는 것으로 사업비만 14조 6천억 원으로 추산됩니다.
