Foreign arrivals down for first time in four years
Analysts blame MERS outbreak for 20% drop

For the first time in four years, fewer non-Koreans are visiting the island.

According to Jeju Customs, 1.18 million foreign tourists arrived in the first three quarters of the year, 20 percent fewer than the corresponding figure from 2014.

Authorities say the mainland MERS outbreak in May caused a lot of potential visitors to cancel their trips through August, and that’s what led to the first overall drop in foreign arrivals since 2011.

In other news, the customs office says that, during the same period, it made 853 busts of travelers trying to exceed the duty-free limit. That’s eight percent more than the same period last year.

반면 같은 기간 면세범위 초과 등의 이유로 세관검사에 적발된 사례는 853건으로 지난해 같은 기간보다 8% 증가한 것으로 집계됐습니다.
