All sea divers to be referred to as ‘haenyeo’
Provincial office gives advance notice of official change in nomenclature

All of the people in Jeju who dive to collect shellfish and other types of seafood will now officially be referred to as “haenyeo.”

The provincial government has given advance notice of a revision to the medical support ordinance for the divers that contains the changes.

Authorities changed the wording for the beneficiaries of financial aid for medical issues to “haenyeo” from a term that translates into English as “diving fishermen.”

That term has been in use since 2006 when Jeju was given semi-autonomy and it enacted the medical support ordinance.

'잠수어업인' 명칭 '해녀'로 통일

좀녀, 잠수어업인 등으로 불리는 해녀의 명칭이 '해녀'로 일원화됩니다.

제주도는 이 같은 내용을 담은 제주도 잠수어업인 진료비 지원조례 개정안을 입법 예고했습니다.

개정안에는 진료비 지원 대상인 '잠수어업인'을
모두 '해녀'로 바꿨습니다.

잠수어업인이라는 명칭은 지난 2006년 제주특별자치도 출범과 함께
해녀의 진료비 지원 조례를 제정하면서 처음 사용됐습니다.
