Jeju seeks national heritage designation for ‘haenyeo’
Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to make decision in December

Provincial authorities are seeking national heritage designation for the island’s female sea divers.

The province announced Monday that it would apply to have haenyeo added to Korea’s Nationally Important Marine Heritage list. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is accepting applications through the end of this month. Following an evaluation of the submissions, it will make two additions to the list in December.

Success in this endeavor would likely give Jeju a boost in getting the haenyeo designated in 2017 as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization.
