This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at a project on the south side of Jeju Island with over 40 years of history. The Jungmun Tourist Complex provides visitors with convenient access to some of Seogwipo’s most spectacular sites.
Of all the famous attractions on Jeju Island, one area stands out as a main center on the southern coast. It’s a place where natural wonders, a variety of museums, and five-star hotels are all within a conveniently accessible area in Seogwipo.

Saekdal-dong, Seogwipo
The Jungmun Tourist Complex is dubbed a multi-tourism area and the largest resort complex to date on Jeju. The project dates back to the early 1970s.
The location couldn’t be better. This part of Seogwipo has a particularly gorgeous coastline. Jungmun Saekdal Beach, named the best beach in Korea by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, is a favorite with surfers and swimmers alike.

Cheonjeyeon Falls, Daepo Columnar Joints
There are plenty of other natural sites to visit including the three-tiered Cheonjeyeon (천제연) Falls and the renowned volcanic formations of the Daepo Columnar Joints, a Jeju Geo site.
And on a clear day, you can even spot Marado (마라도) Island, Korea’s southernmost island.

Five-star hotels, Jeju International Convention Center
For visitors wishing to stay in the area, a number of hotels boast five-star accommodations and convention facilities, including the world-class Jeju International Convention Center.
The close proximity of museums and other attractions in the area are a plus. Yeomiji (여미지) Arboretum, for example, has some 2,000 types of rare plants on display. Seonimgyo (선임교) Bridge and the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, among other sites, are within walking distance, as are duty-free shopping and casino facilities.
