Plan to ease airport congestion to be announced in November
2 options: expansion or construction of second facility

More than ten million people use Jeju International Airport a year, and it can’t handle any more, so a plan to ease congestion will be announced in November.

The transport ministry last year tasked Korea Aerospace University and the Korea Research Institute for Humans Settlements to conduct a feasibility study on how to tackle the problem.

Researchers are considering two options: either building a second airport and using it in conjunction with the existing one or expanding the current facility.

If they decide in favor of building another airport, they will also announce their recommended location for it next month.

Following the transport ministry’s announcement, the project will be added to the country’s fifth long-term plan for airport development, which covers the years from 2016 through 2020.

해 1천만명 이상의 관광객이 이용하며 포화상태에 다다른 제주 공항의 인프라를 확충하는 방안이 다음달 제시됩니다. 지난해부터 국토교통부의 '제주 공항 인프라 확충 사전타당성 검토' 용역을 수행하고 있는 한국항공대학교와 국토연구원 등 용역단은 11월 최종 용역보고서를 발표한다고 밝혔습니다.

제주 공항 인프라 확충은 '제2공항을 건설해 기존 공항과 함께 활용하는 안'과
'기존 공항을 대규모로 확장하는 안' 등 2가지 방안 가운데 한가지가 채택됩니다.
제2공항을 건설할 필요가 있다고 결론이 나면 신공항 입지도 공개될 예정입니다.

국토부는 제주공항 인프라 확충 용역 결과를 발표한 후 내년부터 2020년을 사업기간으로 하는 제5차 공항개발 중장기종합계획에 반영하게 됩니다.
