History textbook conflict escalates
Strong opposition to state-issued national history textbooks

Internal debate is growing within the education sector over the national government’s plans for state-issued Korean history textbooks.

At a Wednesday press conference, the Jeju branch of the Korean Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union joined representatives of 33 area social organizations in criticizing Seoul’s plan.

Meanwhile, the Korea Federation of Teachers’ Associations issued a press release emphasizing the need to provide correct and high-quality history education that takes into account the unique characteristics of the country and the importance of globalization.

한편 또다른 교원단체인 한국교원단체총연합회는 보도자료를 통해 "정부의 확정고시는 국제화와 대한민국의 특수성을 함께 고려한 처사였고, 이제 정쟁에서 벗어나 올바른 역사교육에 대해 총력을 기울여야 한다고 주장했습니다.
