Yellowtail catch tumbles 70% compared to 2014
One fish now selling for nearly \90,000

Fishermen are hauling in far fewer yellowtail in the waters off (마라도) Marado Island in (대정읍) Daejeong-eup.

According to the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, only 1,240 were caught between October 20th and November 5th. That’s 70 percent fewer than during the same period last year.

With the drop in supply, prices have jumped by about 34,000 won per fish to roughly 88,000 won each.

Fishing industry insiders attribute the decline to the recent disappearance of anchovies and damselfish in Marado waters. Yellowtail feed on both.


방어 어획량 급감...작년보다 70% 줄어

대정읍 마라도 인근 해상에 방어 개체수가 줄어 극심한 조업 부진이 계속되고 있습니다.

모슬포수협에 따르면 지난 20일부터 어제(5일)까지 방어 어획량은 1천240마리로 지난해 같은 기간에 비해 70%나 감소했습니다.

특히 어획량 급감으로 현재 대방어 한 마리는 지난해보다 3만 4천원이 오른 8만 8천원 수준에 위판되는 등 가격이 크게 올랐습니다.

어민들은 방어의 먹잇감인 멸치와 자리돔 등이 마라도 해역에 들지 않아 어획량이 줄어든 것으로 보고있습니다.
