‘2nd airport should run around the clock’
Governor Won Heeryong has re-emphasized what he says is the need for Jeju to have an airport that runs 24 hours a day. Though that’s not officially part of the transportation ministry’s plans for the island’s second airport, he is pushing for it to be part of long-term plans for the new facility.

Merchants being chased out
The person who bought a building in the Seogwipo Traditional Market in 2004 when the market went bankrupt now plans to build a 13-floor residential complex at the site. This is forcing current merchants out of the market.

Budget review to begin
The Jemin Ilbo is reporting that the provincial council will begin its review of next year’s provincial budget on December 16th. Some changes were made to the process in an attempt to prevent a rehash of the massive conflicts surrounding this year’s budget.

Banks raise the bar on housing loans
As early as December, (농협) Nonghyup, (축협) Chukhyeop, (새마을) Semaeul Bank, and other lenders will be offering only mortgage loans for which principal payments are required from the beginning of the repayment period. Lenders have been offering loans for which borrowers only had to make interest payments at the beginning.

Top court confirms jail term for lawmaker
Yonhap is reporting that the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a four-year jail term for a ruling party lawmaker for taking bribes from a railway parts supplier in exchange for business favors. The nation's top court also ordered Song Kwang-ho of the Saenuri Party to pay a fine of 70 million won and forfeit another 65 million won.

630,000 students take college entrance exam
More than 630,000 high school seniors and graduates in South Korea took the state-administered annual college entrance exam Thursday. There were 1,212 testing venues across the country.
