In related news, officials have vowed to launch probes of any suspected cases of real estate speculation around the site for the new airport.

Governor Won Heeryong said at a policy meeting on Monday that drastic measures needed to be taken to prevent the wrong people from benefiting from the plan to build a new airport on the island. To that end, officials will pour over land transactions in the area that were made in the last three years. Any that is determined to be a case of speculation will be investigated by judicial authorities.

The governor also spoke of the need for special teams to be set up in Jeju City, Seogwipo and Seongsan-eup to deal with the surging number of inquiries made about last week’s new airport announcement. He would also like to see a policy advisory panel formed with specialists in relevant fields.

특히 3년 이내의 토지거래현황을 분석해서 투기 등 정황이 포착되는 토지에 대해서는 사법당국에 수사의뢰 할 것을 주문했습니다.

이와 함께 최근 제2공항 입지 발표에 따른 민원이 폭주하고 있는 만큼 제주도와 서귀포시, 성산읍 단위에 전담부서를 만들고 최고 전문가들이 참여하는 정책자문단들을 조속히 구성해 제주도가 주도하면서 시행해야 할 발전구상과 종합개발계획을 수립할 것을 강조했습니다.
