Jeju Olle founder publishes book on ‘haenyeo’
‘Understanding Jeju’s diving women is integral to understanding Jeju’

The founder of Jeju’s Olle trails and the president of the Jeju Olle Foundation has published a book about the lives of Jeju’s women divers, or “haenyeo.”

The title of (서명숙) Seo Myeong-sook’s book roughly translates as “Breath, The Moment We Meet.”

The book illustrates the lives of various women divers, from the very experienced… the eldest being 92 years of age… to those who are just starting out. It also tells the story of a haenyeo who recounts the atrocities witnessed as part of the April 3rd Incident in the late 1940s… and a ‘global’ haenyeo who managed to reach out to Germany, Japan, and Russia.

Seo said the reason she decided to publish the book was because of the pivotal role haenyeo played in boosting Jeju’s economy in the past and her belief that, in order to understand Jeju, one had to understand the island’s women divers.

이 책에는 아흔두 살 최고령 해녀부터 해녀 명함을 갓 찍어낸 초보 해녀 이야기, 4ㆍ3 당시 큰 피해를 입은 북촌리 해녀의 애환과 남해안, 동해안은 물론 독도, 심지어는 일본, 블라디보스톡까지 진출한 출가해녀 이야기 까지 제주해녀들의 다양한 삶의 기록이 담겨 있습니다.

서명숙 이사장은 "제주 경제의 핵심적 역할을 해온 해녀는 제주의 원형질"이라며, "제주 해녀를 이해하는 것이야말로 제주를 이해하는 것"이라고 책을 펴낸 이유를 말했습니다.
