Bonggae-dong landfill nearing maximum capacity
New facility won’t be ready until end of 2018

The landfill in Bonggae-dong is close to reaching full capacity, so the provincial government is reportedly working feverishly on its response to the situation.

As a first step, the province will increase its production of solid recovered fuel, which is made by converting garbage into fuel, from 50 tons a day to 80 tons a day. It will also try and encourage local residents to waste less. Finally, provincial officials will hold meetings with Bonggae-dong residents to discuss extending the use of the landfill.

At the current pace, the landfill is expected to be completely full around October 2016. An alternative waste and recycling center isn’t set to go online until the end of 2018.

봉개동 쓰레기매립장 포화…해소대책 절실

제주시 봉개동 쓰레기매립장 포화가 다가온 가운데 제주시가 쓰레기 대란 해소를 위한 대책마련에 나섰습니다.

제주시는 우선 생활폐기물을 이용한 고형연료 생산을 내년부터 하루 50톤에서 80톤으로 확대하고 쓰레기 감량을 위한 범시민생활실천운동을 전개하기로 했습니다. 특히 기존 봉개매립장의 연장사용이 불가피한 만큼 봉개동 주민들과 적극 협의해 나갈 계획입니다.

한편 제주시 봉개동 쓰레기매립장은 내년 10월쯤 만적이 예상되고 있는 가운데 이를 대체할 자원환경순환센터는 2018년 말 완공될 예정이어서 쓰레기 처리 문제는 불가피할 전망입니다.
