Releasing shellfish and seaweed into ocean ‘effective’
New survey finds overwhelming support for program

According to a new report, the release of shellfish and seaweed into the ocean boosts fishing income to over twice what is normally earned.

The provincial government surveyed some 160 people living in 56 fishing villages across the island about their thoughts on such releases, which are meant to attract more fish. Eighty-seven percent of the respondents said they were in favor of the operation and that it needed to be expanded.

The latest analysis on previous releases also showed that after two to three years of manually releasing shellfish and seaweed into the ocean, profits for fishermen in the areas rose to double what was earned where nothing was released.

Based on these findings, the province said it would work to expand the program.

패조류 투석사업에 따른 소득이 일반 어장보다 2배 이상 높은 것으로 나타났습니다.

제주시가 56개 어촌계 160여 명을 대상으로 패조류 투석사업에 대한 설문조사를 실시한 결과 응답자의 87%가 확대 실시해야 한다고 답했습니다.

특히 패조류 투석 후 2-3년이 지나면 일반 어장의 소득보다 2배 높은 것으로 분석됐습니다.

제주시는 이번 설문조사 결과를 토대로 어장 여건에 맞는 패조류 투석사업을 확대할 방침입니다.
