‘Girl of Peace’ statue to be erected in Jeju
In honor of victims of sexual slavery by Japanese military during WWII

A bronze statue of a girl symbolizing the victims of sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II... will be erected at (방일리) Bangilri Park in the Nohyeong 2 District.

A committee formed by student associations from four universities in Jeju said the so-called ‘Girl of Peace’ statue is slated to be unveiled at Bangilri Park on December 19th.

The committee had initially planned to place the statue in front of the Japanese Consulate General in Jeju but was unable to do so due to diplomatic issues. The committee and the provincial government eventually agreed to change the location to the nearby park.

The committee urged Jeju residents to help raise 33 million won needed to build the statue, saying 13 million had already been donated.

제주대학교 등 도내 4개 대학교 총학생회와 단과대 학생회 등으로 구성된 '제주, 대학생이 세우는 평화비 건립 추진위원회'는 오늘 오전 제주도의회 도민의 방에서 기자회견을 열고 다음달 19일 방일리근린공원에서 평화의 소녀상 제막식을 연다고 밝혔습니다.

추진위는 당초 제주시 노형동 주제주 일본총영사관 앞을 평화비 부지로 계획했으나 외교 문제로 비화할 가능성 등을 이유로 허가를 받지 못하고 제주시와 협의한 끝에 인근의 방일리공원을 대체 부지로 선정했습니다.

평화비 건립에는 3천300만원이 필요하지만 현재까지 1천300만원을 모으는데 그쳐 도민사회에 적극적인 참여를 추진위원회를 요청했습니다.
