New Jeju Naval Base squadron and Marine Corps brigade
Base scheduled to open by end of December

A new navy squadron has been formed to defend the Jeju Naval Base, which is slated for completion by the end of December.

The squadron was launched Tuesday to guard the harbor and provide logistic support. It consists of some 500 navy personnel.

Captain Hyun Chang-hoon has been commissioned to head the unit.

Meanwhile a new Marine Corps brigade was also launched Tuesday to replace the previous Navy-led Jeju Defense Command, which was recently decommissioned in a reshuffle.

해군 제주기지전대·해병대 9여단 창설

올해 말 완공예정인 제주민군복합항의 부대경계와 군수지원 임무를 담당하는 해군 제주기지전대가 창설됐습니다.

오늘 창설된 해군 제주기지전대는 부대경계 함정에 대한 항무지원와 군수지원 등의 임무를 수행하며, 전대본부와 예하부대 등 500여명의 장병으로 구성됩니다.


초대 전대장으로는 해사 44기인 현창훈 대령이 임명됐습니다.


이와함께 해군 제주기지전대 창설로 해군과 해병대가 합동으로 운영하던 제주방어사령부는 해체되고 해병대는 전력을 증강해 별도의 작전권을 갖는 9여단으로 재편됐습니다.
