Farmers say Jeju should be declared a ‘disaster area’
Response to ratification of China FTA

Farmers’ groups have requested that Jeju be declared a disaster area, following the Monday ratification of the Korea-China Free Trade Agreement at the National Assembly.

Local members of the Korean Peasants League and the Korean Association of Women Farmers held a press conference in front of the provincial office on Wednesday. They called the national government’s and assembly’s decision regarding the FTA “rash,” and said it had pushed them to the limit.

They urged the provincial government to come up with countermeasures for Jeju farmers, such as declaring Jeju a disaster area, providing compensation for losses incurred by reduced sales of agricultural goods, and stabilizing prices of agricultural produce.

최근 한·중 FTA 비준안이 국회를 통과된 것과 관련해 도내 농민단체들이 국회 비준안 철회와 제주의 특별재난지역 선포를 촉구했습니다.

전국농민회총연맹 제주도연맹과 전국여성농민회총연합 제주도연합은 오늘 오전 제주도청 앞에서 기자회견을 열고 정부와 국회가 한중 FTA를 번갯불에 콩 볶듯이 서둘렀다며 농민들을 벼랑끝으로 내몰았다고 주장했습니다.

특히 이들은 제주형 FTA대책을 당장 만들어야 한다며 특별재난지역 선포와 함께 농산물 피해보상 대책과 농산물 가격 안정 방안 대책 수립을 촉구했습니다.
