National heritage designation for ‘haenyeo’?
Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to make decision next week

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will announce next week whether or not Jeju female sea divers will be added to its national heritage list.

The announcement will be made December 16th. Officials will perform an on-site evaluation this Friday at the Jeju Haenyeo Museum and Gujwa-eup.

If added to Korea’s Nationally Important Marine Heritage list, Jeju haenyeo will be entitled to yearly state funding... and plans will be made for the preservation and management of their unique customs and way of life.

해녀 '국가중요어업유산' 이달 중순 결정

제주해녀의 국가중요어업유산 지정 여부가 이달 중순 결정됩니다.

해양수산부는 이달 16일, 제주해녀와 보성 뻘배, 대동 염전, 경남 남해 죽방렴 등 국가중요어업유산 지정을 신청한 4개 후보지에 대한 최종 결과를 발표할 예정입니다.

사전 평가로 오는 11일 국가중요어업유산 자문위원회가 제주 해녀박물관과 구좌읍을 찾아 현장 평가를 실시합니다.

제주해녀가 국가중요어업유산으로 지정되면 매년 국비 지원을 받게 되며 해녀문화 보전 관리 계획도 수립됩니다.
