Dwindling Japanese tourist arrivals expected to continue
JDI researcher urges local authorities to develop long-term policies

An expert says the current drop in Japanese tourist arrivals is likely to continue, and that a long-term approach is needed to counter the problem.

A study released Monday by Jeju Development Institute researcher (신동일) Shin Dong-il… said the number of Japanese tourists to Jeju has been on the decline since 2013, and that a weak yen and the diplomatic rift between Korea and Japan will make it difficult to turn the tide in the near future.

Shin argued that the economic situation needed to be improved and diplomatic issues resolved in order to turn the situation around, and that those goals will take a considerable amount of time to achieve. Shin therefore urged local authorities to develop long-term policies and strategies to adapt to current trends.

"日 관광객 감소세 지속, 장기적 접근 필요"

당분간 일본인 관광객의 감소세는 지속될 것이며 이를 위해 장기적인 접근이 필요하다는 의견이 나왔습니다.

신동일 제주발전연구원 연구위원은 '일본의 국외관광시장 변화에 따른 제주의 과제'라는 연구에서 이같이 주장했습니다.

특히 일본의 수출확대와 자산가치 상승을 통한 소비 확대를 핵심으로 하는 아베노믹스의 영향으로 엔저현상이 지속되고 있고 한일간 외교갈등, 일본인 관광객의 제주방문 만족도가 떨어지고 있다고 지적했습니다.

이에 따라 한일관계의 개선과 일본의 경제정책 변화는 단기간에 이뤄지기 힘들기 때문에 장기적인 관점에서 정책과 전략수립이 중요하다고 강조했습니다.
