JPTA opposes plan to stop duty-free sales of cigarettes
Tourism assn. against proposal under review by finance ministry
The Jeju Provincial Tourism Association opposes the possible discontinuation of duty-free cigarette sales at Jeju International Airport and Jeju Port, a proposal that is currently under review by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.
In a Tuesday press release, the association said the profits generated from cigarette sales were being put to good use developing the local tourism industry. It argued that the discontinuation of those sales would be the equivalent of the industry losing 80 billion won in revenue a year.
The association also said that discontinuing sales at the only duty-free shops that are open to domestic flight users would run counter to efforts to spur domestic travel. It is calling on the national government to scrap the plan.
