Employment rate in Jeju hits new high
69.6% in November

The employment rate in Jeju has reached its highest point since records began.

According to a report issued Wednesday by the Jeju branch of the Honam Regional Statistics Office, the local employment rate in November was 69.6 percent. That’s 2.2 percentage points higher than the November 2014, and the highest since data began being collected in 2005.

It is also much higher than the national average of 60.8 percent. Analysts say the rise is largely attributable to the thriving construction market in Jeju.

It wasn’t all good news - the number of people who work less than 36 hours a week increased 26 percent. That means working conditions remain relatively poor for many.

호남지방통계청제주사무소에 따르면 지난달 제주지역 고용률은 69.6퍼센트로 지난해 같은 기간보다 2.2퍼센트포인트 상승하며 통계작성을 시작한 2005년 이후 가장 높습니다.

이는 전국 평균 고용률 60.8퍼센트를 크게 웃도는 것으로 도내 건설업 경기가 호황을 이루면서 구직활동이 활발하게 일어난 것으로 분석됩니다.

다만, 주당 근무시간이 36시간 미만 취업자가 지난해보다 26퍼센트 늘어나며 근무 여건은 열악한 것으로 나타났습니다.
