Cargo ship with North Korean crew towed after catching fire
All 15 people aboard Sierra Leone-flagged freighter safe

A cargo ship that caught fire in waters off Jeju’s Biyangdo Island has been safely towed to an area near Hwasun Port in Seogwipo, 13 hours after the blaze began.

The Sierra Leone-flagged freighter was carrying 15 North Korean crew members, according to the Jeju regional headquarters of the Korean Coast Guard. All 15 sailors are said to be safe.

Although a rescue team was dispatched to the site, the North Koreans refused to leave the boat and extinguished the fire themselves, asking the would-be South Korean rescuers to stand by.

The Jeju Coast Guard said it would decide on whether to repair the boat in consultation with the crew, since the fire resulted in no casualties and no pollution.

북한 선원 타고 있던 화재 선박, 예인(아침 기사 수정)

어제 저녁 비양도 북서쪽 해상을 지나던 중 불이 난 시에라리온 선적 화물선이 화재발생 13시간여 만인 오늘 오전 8시쯤 서귀포시 화순항 인근 해역으로 옮겨졌습니다.

제주해양경비안전본부에 따르면 당시 화물선에는 북한 선원 15명이 타고 있었으며 불은 인명피해 없이 자체진화 됐습니다.

다만, 화물선은 이번 화재로 기관실이 불에 타 자력 항해가 불가능한 상태로 북한 선원들은 배에서 내리지 않고 자체 수리를 시도하고 있습니다.

제주해경은 이번 사고가 공해상에서 발생했고 인명피해나 해양오염 등이 없는 만큼 선사 측과 논의한 후 선박 수리와 예인 여부를 정할 계획입니다.
