Province announces new rules for casinos
Stricter screening of casino agents, increased tax rate on sales

A new regulation on casino operations will require all casino agents to pass strict eligibility tests and casinos to pay higher taxes on their earnings.

The provincial government has announced that it will implement the Casino Business Act from next year. The regulation will make it mandatory for casino owners to both formally sign contracts with casino agents detailing the proportion of profits to be shared and test job applicants for eligibility.

If a casino agent is found to have taken part in any illegal activity, penalties will be imposed on the casino with which he or she is contracted. That might include the restriction of the casino’s license to operate.

The province also plans to raise the current tax rate of 10 percent on casino sales to 20 percent.
