Budget phones to get new service in 2016
Roughly \10,000 per day of unlimited data roaming

Beginning next year, users of so-called “budget phones” will also be able to enjoy unlimited data roaming, for as little as roughly 10,000 won a day.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning decided last month to provide such service, as budget phone users now account for over 10 percent of all mobile phone users in the country. Currently it costs around 120,000 won to use a day’s worth of unlimited data on budget phones, but the ministry announced it had agreed to lease the roaming network of Korea’s three mobile phone companies and provide unlimited data roaming for budget phone users at just a fraction of the current cost.

The service will be available in January.


알뜰폰 내년부터 '1일 무제한 데이터 로밍서비스'

내년부터 알뜰폰 사용자도 하루 만원 정도에 '1일 무제한 데이터 로밍서비스'를 이용할 수 있을 전망입니다.

미래창조과학부는 지난달 말 국내 이동통신시장에서 알뜰폰이 차지하는 점유율이 10.1%를 넘어서면서 이 같은 서비스 개선을 추진하기로 했습니다. 이를 위해 알뜰폰 사업자에게 로밍망을 빌려주는 국내 이동통신 3사와 협의해 현재 1인당 하루 12만 원 선인 로밍망 임대비용을 1만 원 선으로 낮추기로 했습니다.

이에 따라 내년 1월부터 알뜰폰 사용자도 하루 만원 이하에서 무제한 데이터 로밍 서비스를 이용할 수 있을 것으로 보입니다.
