First foreign-owned for-profit hospital to be built in Jeju
Health ministry approves plan for Greenland International Hospital

The national government on Friday approved a plan to build the country’s first foreign-owned for-profit hospital in Jeju.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare said it approved Jeju’s request to build Greenland International Hospital, which will be owned by China’s Greenland Group. The hospital will be built on 28,000 square meters of land in Topyeong-dong, Seogwipo… and it will offer services in plastic surgery, dermatology, internal medicine, and family medicine.

This for-profit hospital will be investor-owned and it is targeted at treating mostly foreign patients, but Korean citizens may also use the medical facility without insurance coverage.

Opponents say this system can result in higher medical costs, and lead to a dismantlement of the domestic medical insurance coverage scheme that will eventually hurt users.

보건복지부는 제주특별자치도가 신청한 중국 녹지그룹의 투자개방형 외국병원 '녹지국제병원' 설립을 승인하기로 결정했다고 밝혔습니다. 이에 따라 제주도의 공식 허가가 나면 병원 설립이 확정됩니다.

녹지그룹 측은 설립이 확정되면 서귀포시 토평동 2만 8천여 제곱미터 부지에 성형외과와 피부과, 내과, 가정의학과 등 4개 진료과를 갖춘다는 계획입니다.

투자개방형 외국병원은 외국 자본과 국내 의료자원을 결합시켜 외국인 환자 위주의 종합 의료서비스를 제공하는 곳으로 내국인도 건강보험 적용을 포기하면 이용할 수 있습니다.

정부의 투자개방형 외국병원 도입 방침과 관련해 시민단체들은 병건강보험 무력화 등 국내 의료체계 근간이 흔들릴 것이라며 반대하고 있습니다.
