The provincial government is pushing ahead with the establishment of a public corporation for marine shipping. It is planning to launch a feasibility study in January. If the result of that is deemed feasible, local officials will begin preparing to launch the corporation in 2017.

The Jemin Ilbo is reporting on the dwindling sales of winter items because of the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been having. Sales of heating supplies at EMart are down 30 percent this month compared to last December.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recently selected the country’s top ten festivals. The only local one on the list was the fire festival, prompting the paper to say officials need to work harder on creating and promoting local events so Jeju can live up to its nickname of the “Island of Festivals.”

The Halla Ilbo is reporting on the provincial government’s plan to secure 48 billion won to help farmers of outdoor-grown mandarin oranges. The money will be available for the purchase of farming machinery, interest payments on agricultural loans, and other needs.

4,500 pigs killed for porcine epidemic diarrhea
A porcine epidemic diarrhea outbreak has had a significant effect on local farms. From January 2015 through last month, cases were reported at 39 locations, and four and a half thousand animals were culled.

Private debt hits record high in Q3
Yonhap is reporting that loans extended to South Korean households and private firms reached a new high in the third quarter. Central bank data, released on Monday, showed that the borrowing accounted for over 180 percent of the country's overall gross domestic product.

SK, Japan hold talks on ‘comfort women’ issue
South Korea and Japan held a working-level meeting Sunday on the issue of former Korean sex slaves for Japan's World War II soldiers. The two sides reportedly tried to work out differences and come up with "creative alternatives" to ensure their top diplomats can produce a deal on wartime sexual slavery, the biggest thorn in the side of bilateral relations.
